Reviews

This is the first text to present in detail clinical observations, data, and specific system description, as well as patient use of functional electrical stimulation (FES). FES is employed to enable spinal cord injury patients who are complete paraplegics to stand and ambulate without bracing. The FES system described is the first to receive FDA approval. The text covers twelve years of ambulation experience and over 10,000 hours of actual FES-based ambulation, representing the largest pool of patients and the longest FES ambulation project in the United States (the first ambulation was in January 1982 at Michael Reese Hospital and Medical Center, Chicago). This text is specifically directed at physicians in rehabilitation medicine, physical therapy, and electrophysiology. It should be of interest to neurologists, neurosurgeons, orthopedic surgeons, occupational therapists, and biomedical engineers.

"This book is a fascinating description of a remarkable accomplishment by determined investigators who developed, without fanfare, a simple but clinically workable FES system for ambulation...a must for all people who are involved in FES research or clinical application...contains information that is not readily available elsewhere, and provides a valuable inspiration to other developers of devices and technology for persons with disabilities..." -- Kristjan T. Ragnarsson, MD, Dept. of Veterans Affairs Journal of Rehabilitation, May 1995
