This book discusses the men and women who opposed the entry of the United States into World War I. All had personal or political relations with Wilson and, with one exception, supported him in the
1916 election. Most of them denied they were pacifists. Ironically, almost all were internationalists while condemned as isolationists. They were not, however, a homogeneous group. Differences with the President evolved
over specific issues. The book does not dwell on what might have happened in an ideal world. Essentially, it is concerned with judgment, foresight, and freedom of thought. Many questions are raised that are relevant
today such as the use of war as an instrument of foreign policy and the potential for mediation. It is ideal as supplementary reading for college students of introductory courses in American history, as well as
advanced classes in twentieth century history, political science, and peace studies. |
