The advent of the theory of plate tectonics has made it evident that geology and the physics of the earth's interior are inseparable and that study of both is needed to ensure further progress in the
earth sciences. Although there are many excellent texts for students of physics or graduate students of geophysics, few if any recent introductory texts present geologists with the more global aspects of geophysics.
This text is intended to fill that gap. At least one year each of calculus and physics is assumed, and several problems also require the ability to write simple computer programs. A knowledge of vector calculus is not
assumed and the author has used partial derivatives where needed. A solutions manual is available to qualified instructors. |
