A work intended as an introductory text on transonic aerodynamics for engineers, which assumes that the reader has some familiarity with the basic gasdynamics of subsonic and supersonic flows, this book consists of two parts. Part 1 introduces the subject and reviews the basic theory of gasdynamics that is particularly germane to transonic flow. Throughout the development of the subject, it is emphasized that all flows are viscous and, to varying degrees, unsteady. Attention is then focused upon the small disturbance theory, not because of any preeminence that this theory may have held in the development of the subject, but because of the fundamental insight into transonic aerodynamics that was afforded by its study. Finally, the influence of viscous forces is considered, along with a brief study of the stochastic processes relating to turbulence and shock-wave turbulence interactions.
