This volume is the outcome of an attempt to reformulate the nature of the boundaries between work and play, as well as the urgent practical need to find ways of stimulating children who suffer from play deficits. It is clear from anthropological and historical studies that the fairly arbitrary dualism between work and play that has characterized the treatment of these activities in the Western World during the past several hundred years has not been typical of humanity in general. We appear to be witnessing now a basic shift in the treatment of play and other expressive activities.
