Important developments in the study of free-boundary problems have been achieved in recent years by introducing variational approach wherever possible. This enables one to conclude without great efforts that a solution to the free-boundary problem exists in some "weak" sense. One can proceed to establish the regularity of the solution and then study the smoothness of the free boundary itself. Within the last five years significant new methods have been developed for analyzing the free boundary and the theory has now reached a certain stage of maturity; its future looks even more exciting. An increasing number of physical and engineering problems are becoming accessible to this growing body of methods.
